Is Your Life Aligned to Your Signature Strengths?

The next questions might be, “What are my Signature Strengths? How do I find them? How do I engage and express them?

Your signature strengths are those that best describe the core aspects of you who you are.

Do you find that your everyday journey is easy, fun and rewarding? Or is it tiring, leaving you feeling frustrated at  the end of the day.

I spent most of my younger life feeling guilty before I closed my eyes at night, never having the satisfaction that I had done all of my “to do list.” What was missing was that I had not been introduced to the magic tool box that each of us are born with, our “inner signature strengths.”

Signature strengths are the things we like doing and come naturally to us to execute. We find more happiness in our life if it is aligned with our signature strengths.

For example, I love creating a mosaic picture in my garden with colorful flowers. I can happily spend hours in my garden forgetting to eat lunch and knowing that my muscles will be aching tomorrow.September 2009 - June 2010 003

The end results of my labor and creativity excites me. But a constrained job as an accountant on a secretary sitting at a desk all day would leave me feeling tired and unfulfilled.

As I mentioned, your signature strengths are given to you at birth. These strengths are the strong nudges you get when you are engaged in a task that you enjoy. They are the ones that are energizing and comfortable to use. Your friends and family would agree that these are definitely “you.” These are already pathways in your brain that you were born with or might have been evident when you were a child. Some of these signature strengths might be latent; however it is still within you.

Discovering your 24 signature strengths by taking your personal strengths assessment will benefit your efforts in achievement and create your best life.

When you learn to engage your strengths, you will feel as if you have more energy available to you.

People using their signature strengths find that they have more energy and excitement in their life.

They feel that they are being “real.” They are being the person they want to be, not the person someone else wants them to be.

 My top signature strengths are:

 Woo

Woo stands for winning others over. I enjoy the challenge of meeting new people and         getting to know them.

 Learner

I love to learn. I never was interested in learning when I was younger. Now it is exciting to learn new things.

 Responsibility

I feel a strong responsibility to show up and deliver what I promised.

Activator

I know I will not be judged by what I say or what I think, but what I get done.

How can you use your discoveries in achieving your personal goals?

There is a natural progression that you may follow:

Take the Strengths Based Survey to determine your order of signature strengths.

Pushing the Envelope – Creating Your Own Adventure

Some believe that fate determines their lives. Others abide by the expression, “Life is what you make it.” Although it’s fine to believe in fate, if you want something different, exhilarating, or exciting in life, it might not work out so well to sit around waiting for fate to produce it. Instead, why not see your life as something you have a hand in?

Use these strategies to create the adventures you yearn for:

  1. Try something different. Shake up your routine. For example, if every Friday night you go to the same restaurant for seafood, this Friday, go to the new vegetarian restaurant across town. Or go crazy and go on Thursday!
  2. Stop taking the path of least resistance. It’s not unusual to take the path you perceive as “safe”– that provides you with the least obstacles and roadblocks. However, sometimes, you might be compelled to take a rougher road, especially if the end result provides a great adventure.
  • Struggle now to win great rewards later. Refrain from shying away from challenges that might beset you if you truly feel that great rewards will come in the future.
  1. Generate a list of least likely options. If you usually just tool along down a familiar road, what if you were to consider some of those hairpin curves or steep, climbing stretches? You might be surprised what’s on the other end of your journey.
  • Consider your choices. For example, if you have options of either taking a 9-week course on being a receptionist or 2 years of night school to become an x-ray technician, look closely at your least likely option so you can take into account the journey and the adventure of each choice.
  1. Choose the journey that deep down, you think you “can’t” do but you really want to. Maybe you’re worried about getting the school loan for the 2-year educational program and you know the time constraints will be tough, but you still want to go for it.
  • And then, reality sets in and you think, “I just can’t do it, I won’t have time to help my neighbors or see my brother as much.” Maybe it’s time to opt for the thing that really calls to you, deep inside. It might be the greatest ride of your life! And who knows who you might encounter along the way?
  1. Act now. There’s an old saying: “He who hesitates is lost.” In order to discover all the hidden gems that life has in store for you, don’t let any grass grow under your feet. Do something. Now.
  2. Claim your own life. Although you might have lived your life based on what your parents or friends wanted you to do, you can step forward now to take possession of your own life. What kind of life adventures do you want?
  3. Live life as if you won’t get a second chance. Even if you believe in multiple lives, view your current life as if it’s the only one you’ll have. Staying in touch with that idea will compel you to go toward your desired adventures full speed ahead. Pretend it could all be over tomorrow.

Living a life filled with adventure requires you to reach out of that comfort zone and push the envelope a bit. Go for something different and take a more challenging path. Make a list of least-likely choices. Look deep down within yourself to find what you really want. Start now and take back your life. Live as if you won’t get a second go-round.

Create your own life adventure and enjoy the results!
